Governor Ralph Northam announced on Monday his support for legislation that would legalize the adult recreational use of marijuana.
The Governor said he has worked with lawmakers to finalize legislation ahead of the 2021 General Assembly session, including the upcoming release of a report that examines the impact of legalizing adult-use marijuana.
The Northam Administration says that any legislation legalizing adult-use of marijuana must address social, racial and economic equity, public health, protections for young people, upholding the Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act and data collection.
In a statement, Governor Northam said “Our Commonwealth has an opportunity to be the first state in the South to take this step, and we will lead with a focus on equity, public health, and public safety. I look forward to working with the General Assembly to get this right.”
